You color your hair for a variety of reasons: to look different, to enhance your natural qualities, or to cover the graying that creeps in. You may use a single process color or like Marilyn Monroe, a double process, bleaching the hair before toning it. But did you know how hair coloring can damage your hair?
What happens when you color your hair
Your hair’s cuticle is the outermost part of each individual hair. It is hard and resembles the shingles on a roof, with cells that overlap and range from 5 to 12 in depth. It gives your hair shaft strength, protects it, and controls the moisture content in your hair.
When you color your hair, in order for the hair dye to permeate the follicle a chemical substance such as ammonia is used. Ammonia elevates your hair’s pH, which in turn relaxes the cuticle so that it lifts up to allow the dye to enter your hair shaft.
The next step in the process is the actual dye. In order for new color to be introduced, your current color has to be destroyed with peroxide. After the new color has developed for a period of time, your hair will be rinsed and the cuticle will come down again.
This whole process creates damage to your hair by weakening the cuticle. Your hair’s cuticle is not really meant to be lifted up and the resulting damage leaves your hair dry and hard to manage—lying flat or frizzing out of control.
